Transport

A vintage car to deliver the bride to church, or a hot-air balloon to fly the newly weds off at the end of the reception can make a wedding a truly memorable occasion and look great on pictures and videos.

But think carefully, bear the practicalities in mind and plan ahead if you want to make the transport at your wedding an enjoyable part of the day.

Book early - Many wedding transport companies can arrange something special such as a horse and carriage, vintage car or white Rolls Royce or Bentley, but these are in great demand, especially in the summer months. You would be wise to book months in advance to avoid disappointment.

Surprise Departure - Traditionally, it has been the responsibility of the groom to arrange and pay for transport from the reception to the first-night hotel. It is a chance for him to plan a surprise for his new bride and the guests by booking something unusual such as a hot air balloon or helicopter.

Think practically - A hot air balloon, for example, can be grounded if the wind speed reaches a certain level, so plan an alternative. An open carriage won't be much fun in heavy rain and horse-drawn transport can be uncomfortable and quickly loses its charm if your hotel is more than a couple of miles away from the church. Check with the transport company that the carriage has sturdy rain cover and consider transferring to a car once out of sight of your guests if you have a long distance to travel.

Guests - Choose a venue for the reception that can be reached easily from the church or, if it is further afield you may want to consider arranging transport for the guests. Some people have even been known to hire out a decorated double decker bus to get the guests to the reception. However, when organising your guests, don't feel obliged to book accommodation and transport. Instead, produce a single piece of paper outlining hotels and travel details and send this to your guests so they can make their own arrangements.
